Regular cleaning and conditioning is preventive maintenance here, not a luxury.
A practical routine
- Clean and condition every three to four months if parked outdoors
- Use a windshield sunshade — it reduces peak interior temperature meaningfully
- Wipe sunscreen off light leather promptly; it stains permanently once baked in
- Address denim dye transfer while it is fresh
- Condition the steering wheel too, which degrades first
What conditioning can and cannot do
Conditioning keeps the protective coating flexible and slows UV damage. It cannot repair cracking, worn-through bolsters or peeling coatings — those are upholstery repairs. Once you see cracks, the goal shifts to preventing them from spreading.
Frequently asked questions
Will conditioner make seats slippery?
Not when the excess is buffed off. A proper finish is satin and grippy, not glossy.
Is leather harder to maintain than cloth?
It is easier to wipe clean but more vulnerable to heat and UV, so it needs a schedule.
