UV damage is cumulative and mostly irreversible, so prevention genuinely matters more than repair.
How UV damage shows up
- Horizontal panels fade and go chalky before vertical ones
- Clear coat hazes and, in advanced cases, begins to peel
- Headlight lenses yellow as their factory UV coating fails
- Dashboards and door tops fade and crack
- Black exterior trim turns gray and chalky
Defense that works
Keep a protective layer on the paint at all times — sealant at minimum, coating if you keep the car long-term. Park in shade or a garage when possible, use a windshield sunshade, and restore headlights before the plastic degrades deeply. Wash regularly so contamination is not baking against the finish for months.
Frequently asked questions
Does a car cover help?
Yes if it is clean and fitted. A gritty cover flapping in wind will marr the paint it is protecting.
Is faded paint recoverable?
Often — polishing removes the oxidized layer. Peeling clear coat is not recoverable and needs refinishing.
