Run the back of your hand across the hood after a wash. If it feels like fine sandpaper, the paint has bonded contamination that needs decontamination and claying before wax. Skipping that step is the most common reason a freshly waxed car still looks flat.
On older or neglected paint, a light polish before waxing does far more for gloss than any premium wax applied over dull clear coat.
