There are two severities, and confusing them leads to people scrubbing at damage that chemicals cannot touch.
Deposits versus etching
Deposits sit on top of the clear coat and dissolve with a dedicated mineral remover, followed by a wash and often claying. This is quick and inexpensive when caught early.
Etching is a shallow crater in the clear coat left after repeated heat cycles. No chemical fixes it — it has to be polished out, which means paint correction.
Prevention
- Adjust irrigation so it does not reach the vehicle
- Never let a washed car air-dry in direct sun
- Keep sealant or a coating on the paint so minerals sit above the clear coat
- Rinse and dry promptly after unexpected sprinkler exposure
- Address spots early, before summer heat bakes them in
Frequently asked questions
Can vinegar remove water spots?
Household acids can lift light deposits but risk damaging trim and unprotected finishes. A dedicated automotive product is safer.
Do spots on glass come out?
Usually, with glass-specific polishing. Long-standing windshield etching is the hardest case.
