There are two stages of severity, and they need different treatments.
Stage one: mineral deposits
Deposits sitting on top of the clear coat. These respond to a dedicated acidic mineral remover followed by a proper wash and, if necessary, claying. Caught early, this is a straightforward and inexpensive fix, and the paint comes back completely.
Stage two: etching
When deposits sit through repeated heat cycles, the minerals eat a shallow crater into the clear coat. Chemicals will not fix this — the surface has to be leveled with machine polishing, which means paint correction. Deep etching on a repeatedly neglected car may only improve rather than disappear.
Glass is its own case. Etched windshields and side glass need dedicated glass polishing compounds, and severe cases can be beyond correction.
Preventing water spots here
- Adjust sprinklers and irrigation so they do not hit the vehicle — the highest-value fix available
- Do not let the car air-dry in the sun after washing
- Park away from lawn edges and irrigated planters when possible
- Keep a sealant or coating on the paint so deposits sit above the clear coat and rinse off
- Rinse and dry promptly after any unexpected sprinkler exposure
Frequently asked questions
Are water spots permanent?
Surface deposits are not. Etched spots require polishing, and very deep etching may only improve.
Can you remove spots from glass?
Yes, with glass-specific polishing. Long-standing etching in windshields is the hardest case and is not always fully removable.
Will a ceramic coating prevent them?
It greatly reduces them because water sheets off rather than sitting in droplets, but nothing eliminates the risk if hard water repeatedly dries on hot paint.
