Dealing with Pollen and Central Valley Dust

Spring pollen and summer dust are constants in the Sacramento Valley. Both are mostly harmless if handled correctly and both cause real damage if handled the way most people instinctively handle them.

The instinct — wiping dust off dry paint with a towel — is the worst possible option.

Handling it safely

  • Never dry-wipe dust; it is abrasive and will install swirl marks
  • Rinse first, always, before anything touches the paint
  • Wash more frequently during peak pollen weeks rather than letting it accumulate
  • Keep protection on the paint so pollen and dust sit above the clear coat
  • Replace the cabin air filter more often than the manual suggests

Interior impact

Dust settles into vents, textured plastics and carpet backing, where vacuuming alone will not lift it. Compressed air plus detail brushes before wiping is what actually removes it — otherwise you just smear it around.

Frequently asked questions

Does pollen damage paint?

Not immediately, but pollen combined with moisture and heat becomes acidic and can mark unprotected paint.

Is a rinseless wash safe during pollen season?

For light dust, yes. For heavy accumulation, use a proper rinse first.
