It is the least glamorous service we offer and one of the most important. Every protection product performs better and lasts longer on genuinely decontaminated paint.
Chemical decontamination
An iron remover is sprayed onto washed paint and wheels, where it reacts with ferrous particles and dissolves them. The reaction turns visibly purple as it works, which makes it easy to show a customer exactly how much fallout was sitting in their paint. Freeway commuters on I-5, Highway 99 and Highway 50 tend to have a lot.
Tar and adhesive removal follows on the lower panels, rocker areas and behind the wheels, where road film accumulates most heavily.
Mechanical decontamination
After the chemical stage, we clay any surface that still feels rough. Together, the two steps typically take paint from gritty to genuinely smooth, which is the baseline for polishing or coating work.
Who needs it most
- Vehicles that commute daily on Sacramento-area freeways
- Cars parked near light rail lines, rail corridors or heavy construction
- Any vehicle that has not been clayed in over a year
- Every vehicle scheduled for paint correction, sealant or ceramic coating
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a clay bar treatment?
Claying is the mechanical half. Full decontamination adds the chemical iron and tar removal stage that dissolves what clay cannot lift.
Does it damage paint?
No. Iron removers are formulated for automotive finishes and are rinsed thoroughly. They should not be allowed to dry on the surface, which is why we work in shade and in sections.
Is decontamination included in a full detail?
Yes — full details include chemical decontamination, and claying where the paint needs it.
